Mexican is a dialect of their root language

Spanish

It is well understood in educated communities or "colleges" that using "Mexican" is an acceptable term for language

people that are educated understand than "Mexican" itself isn't a language but just a dialect

Well, Mastermind575, it is still spanish what is spoken in mexico. Spanish is spoken in 21 countries worldwide so there are some differences. We name it "modismos" when it change a little (in the north or south of a zone) or "acento" when it cahnges a lot, for example from Spain to Argentina or Mexico.
The Real Academia de la Lengua Española Admit almost all of the speaking forms.
